If you’re committed to skincare, skin health, or skin longevity, sun protection is one of the most impactful steps to have in your skincare routine. Daily SPF is the only way to protect your skin from UV damage which can manifest as premature signs of aging (fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots), or skin cancer (the most common cancer in the United States*).
Navigating the world of sunscreen can feel surprisingly nuanced, despite there being only two broad categories: chemical and mineral. And while both are effective at shielding the skin from UVA and UVB rays, they work in very different ways, based on very different formulas.
Whether you’re drawn to lightweight formulas or looking for something that is compatible with sensitive skin, understanding these differences will help you find the best sunscreen.

If we zoom out, of course. Chemical and mineral sunscreen is designed with the same goal in mind: to protect your skin. Both are made in a lab. Both offer broad-spectrum protection. Both are regulated for safety and efficacy. Both are formulated for daily wear. It’s when we start talking about their product composition that differences start to emerge.
Chemical sunscreens work like a sponge, absorbing UV rays and converting them to heat, which is then released from the skin. They typically contain one or more active, organic compounds such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, homosalate, or octinoxate. But it is these chemical filters that sometimes cause irritation with particularly sensitive or reactive skin types.
Often regarded as the more ‘cosmetically elegant’ solution to sun protection, chemical formulas tend to be lightweight or weightless, fast-absorbing, and invisible on the skin. With greater resistance to water and sweat, this style of SPF is a great option for anyone leading an active lifestyle.
Mineral sunscreens, otherwise known as ‘physical’ sunscreens, create a protective barrier on the surface of your skin to deflect UV rays, rather than absorb them. They most commonly use natural zinc oxide and/or titanium oxide (white colored minerals) which explains why this style of SPF is infamous for leaving a white cast on your skin.
Yes! They are more wearable and skin-flattering than earlier generations. Product innovation is now much more sophisticated, but due to hero ingredients, they will never be 100% invisible.
Zinc oxide has anti-inflammatory properties, making this the gentler, more soothing option for sensitive, reactive, or post-procedure skin. If you’re acne-prone, we recommend you pick up a mineral sunscreen too.
Unfortunately, there’s no single answer. This will come down to your individual skin type, skin concerns, and product preferences. If you are looking for something ultra-lightweight and invisible, a chemical formula might suit you better. If you have sensitive, reactive, or acne-prone skin, a mineral formula is likely the most comfortable choice.
Broad-spectrum protection and daily application matter far more than which category you land in. The best sunscreen is one you actually want to wear. Every day.
We focused on an all-in-one formula: protection, prevention, and correction.
